If your Magento store used a flat structure like domain.com/product-name.html, every single one of those links will break the moment you launch on Shopify. Without a one-to-one redirect strategy, your existing rankings will vanish. Google will see thousands of 404 errors and assume your site is broken.
How to replatform without torching your revenue requires understanding that Shopify is not just a different tool; it is a different logic. You cannot force Magento’s logic onto Shopify. You have to map the old data to the new structure with precision.

1. The Master Redirect Map (301 Strategy)
This is the most critical step. Do not rely on “blanket redirects” that send all old traffic to your new homepage. This kills the SEO value of individual product pages.
- Crawl the current site: Use a tool like Screaming Frog to export every single live URL on your Magento store.
- Filter by traffic: Use GA4 and Search Console to identify which pages actually get visits.
- Map 1:1: Every old Magento product URL must point to its new Shopify equivalent. Every old category must point to a Shopify Collection.
- Audit for 404s: Upload your redirect list to Shopify (or a redirect app for larger sets) and test them before the site goes live.
2. Metadata Migration
Magento allows for deeply customized meta titles and descriptions, but these often get lost during a data migration.
- Audit your top performers: Identify the pages that rank for your most profitable keywords.
- Manual Porting: If your migration tool doesn’t bring over custom meta tags, you must manually enter them in Shopify.
- Check H1 Tags: Verify that your product names on Shopify are using H1 tags. Some themes incorrectly use H2s for product titles, which can hurt your ranking potential.
3. Analytics and Tracking (GA4/GTM)
If you can’t measure it, you can’t fix it. Most Magento-to-Shopify moves break conversion tracking.
- Verify GA4 Configuration: Confirm your data stream is active and tracking e-commerce events (view_item, add_to_cart, purchase).
- Verify Google Tag Manager: Most Shopify themes require custom GTM implementation to track advanced data layers.
- Benchmark Data: Record your conversion rates, average order value, and organic traffic levels for the 90 days prior to migration. You need this to spot any post-launch leaks.

Structured Data and the AI Era
The way search engines read your site is changing. It isn’t just about keywords anymore; it is about how machines understand your data. Shopify has great built-in schema for products, but it often needs help to be truly “LLM-friendly.”

- Test the Checkout: It sounds obvious, but many brands focus so much on SEO they forget to confirm the “Buy” button works across all devices.
