Introduction

We fixed a Magento store’s over-indexation problem in November 2024. Three months later, the technical SEO remediation generated $786,379 in attributed revenue growth for a company that is a major player in wire and cable production.

The client had 40,000 pages indexed when only 9,000 should exist. Google was wasting crawl budget on duplicate and low-value pages instead of focusing on revenue-generating product pages. We corrected the indexation issues and let the numbers tell the story.

The Challenge

Their Magento store had a severe over-indexation issue. Google Search Console showed 40,000 indexed pages despite the site only having 9,000 valid pages—31,000 pages that shouldn’t exist were consuming Google’s crawl budget.

This meant Google was crawling and indexing duplicate URLs, filter variations, session parameters, and other technical garbage instead of focusing on actual product and category pages that drive revenue.

The business impact: their high-value wire and cable products weren’t getting proper visibility in search results. Category pages for key wire and cable products were buried under thousands of useless indexed pages.

This is a classic Magento technical SEO problem. The platform’s URL structure, layered navigation, and sorting parameters create indexation nightmares when not properly configured. Most agencies either don’t catch these issues or don’t know how to fix them at the platform level.

Our Approach

We performed a complete technical SEO audit using Google Search Console data, Screaming Frog crawl analysis, and direct Magento admin access to understand the indexation architecture.

The problems? Layered navigation creating thousands of filter combination URLs being indexed, product sorting parameters generating duplicate pages, session IDs and tracking parameters in URLs, staging and development server URLs being crawled, and pagination issues creating unnecessary indexed pages.

Our remediation focused on platform-level fixes, not just robots.txt bandaids. We implemented proper canonical tags at the Magento theme level, configured meta robots directives for filter and sort pages, restructured internal linking to prevent crawling of parameter variations, submitted updated XML sitemaps with only valid URLs, and used Google Search Console’s URL removal tool for immediate deindexing of problem pages.

The indexed page count dropped from 40,000 to 13,000 within weeks—still higher than the ideal 9,000, but a 67% reduction that immediately improved crawl efficiency. Google could now focus on pages that actually matter: product pages, category pages, and informational content that drives conversions.

The Result

90-day performance (November 2024 – February 2025):

Search visibility exploded: total impressions up 79.5% (from 759K to 1.36M), organic clicks up 61.9% (from 17K to 27.5K), product snippet impressions up 107% (from 4.4M to 9.2M), and product snippet clicks up 80% (from 97K to 174.7K).

Business metrics showed immediate impact: 8.95% increase in items sold (6.21M to 6.76M units), total revenue grew to $8.82M, and most important—$786,379 in SEO-attributed revenue growth.

Top-performing products saw massive visibility gains. Primary product keyword impressions up 86%, secondary keywords impressions up 87%, and homepage impressions up 160%.

Conversion rates remained stable despite the traffic surge, indicating quality traffic growth rather than just volume increases. The technical fixes brought qualified buyers searching for specific wire and cable products.

Why This Works

Technical SEO isn’t about keywords or content, it’s about making sure Google can efficiently crawl and index the pages that generate revenue. When 77% of your indexed pages shouldn’t exist, you’re actively working against your own visibility.

Magento’s architecture makes these problems common but not inevitable. The platform requires specific technical configurations to prevent over-indexation. Most agencies run basic SEO audits that identify these issues but can’t implement platform-specific fixes. They don’t have Magento expertise to make theme-level changes or proper admin access to configure technical directives correctly.

The revenue attribution here isn’t speculative. We tracked the correlation between deindexing problem pages, increased visibility for revenue-generating pages, and actual sales growth in the same product categories that gained search visibility. The 8.95% increase in items sold directly aligns with the 79.5% increase in search impressions.

This demonstrates why platform-specific technical knowledge matters. Generic SEO agencies would have recommended fixes without being able to implement them. Development teams would have made the changes without understanding the SEO implications. We bridge both: understanding what needs to happen technically and having the Magento expertise to execute it correctly.

Technical foundation determines visibility. Fix your indexation problems, and Google can actually find the pages that make you money.

Working with Agency brought a fresh perspective to our decade-old brand. Their strategic approach helped us maintain our core values while pushing our visual identity into the future.

The results exceeded our expectations – our digital presence now truly reflects who we are.
