I didn’t learn this from reading about agencies. I built one inside a development team.

Bryan Mull
Founder, Digital Mully

Before Digital Mully, I was brought in to build a digital marketing department from scratch inside Crimson Agility, a Magento development agency. When I started, they had zero marketing capability. When I left, they had a functioning department with processes, project management, client-facing delivery, and a team that could handle SEO, paid search, email, and analytics for their entire client base. That department is still running.

I hired the people, defined the services, built the proposals, structured the pricing, set up the project management, trained the team, and sat in client meetings as a Crimson Agility team member. I wasn’t an outside consultant. I was embedded. The clients didn’t know I wasn’t a full-time employee, and that’s exactly how it should work.

I’ve done the same thing at other companies since. Every time, the pattern is the same: a strong development team with established client relationships needs marketing capability but doesn’t want to hire a marketing team, doesn’t want to risk quality, and doesn’t want to send clients to a marketing agency that might not understand the platform — or worse, might try to take the client.

Digital Mully exists to solve that exact problem. We embed into your team, deliver under your brand, and bring a level of e-commerce marketing expertise that your clients will attribute entirely to you.

Best for Scenarios

This partnership model works best when one or more of these situations sounds familiar.

Marketing requests are coming in and you’re turning them down.

Your clients trust your team for development. Now they’re asking about SEO, AI visibility, paid search, and analytics — and you don’t have the in-house expertise to deliver. Every time you say “that’s not what we do,” there’s a chance that client finds an agency that does both development and marketing. And then you’re not just losing the marketing revenue — you’re risking the development relationship.

Your last marketing partner didn’t understand your platform or embarrassed you in front of a client.

Generic marketing agencies don’t understand Magento’s architecture, Shopify’s limitations, or how BigCommerce handles product data. They show up to client meetings and say the wrong things. They produce deliverables that don’t account for how your platform actually works. You need a partner who has worked inside development teams and knows the difference between a deployment issue and an SEO recommendation.

Building an internal marketing department is expensive and risky.

A competent marketing hire costs $80K–$120K before benefits. You’d need at least two to cover SEO, paid search, email, and analytics with any real depth. And you’d still need someone who understands your specific platforms. That’s a $200K+ investment with no guarantee it works. A partnership lets you add a full marketing capability at a fraction of that cost with zero hiring risk.

Digital marketing done right creates billable development hours.

When we audit a client’s site and recommend a theme redesign, a schema implementation, or Core Web Vitals fixes, that’s development work your team bills for. When we run paid search that drives more traffic, that’s a higher-performing site that needs ongoing platform support. Marketing isn’t a separate revenue stream — it’s a multiplier for the development work you already do.

Frequently asked

Questions development team owners ask before starting a partnership. If you don’t see yours, let’s have a direct conversation.

How does the white-label model actually work?

We operate as an extension of your team. You give us an email address on your domain. We attend client meetings as your staff. All deliverables carry your branding. Your clients never interact with Digital Mully directly unless you choose to introduce us.

We log our hours in your project management system, just like an employee would. You assign us work through your existing workflow, and we deliver through that same channel.

How much does it cost?

Our partnership rate set by the per hour. This allows you to mark up our time and maintain healthy margins.

Every hour is tracked and transparent. We’re also developing flat-rate packages for specific programs like AI Visibility audits, so teams can offer productized marketing services without hourly tracking.

Do we need to sign a contract?

No. Most partnerships start with a small block of hours on a single client project so both teams can see how the model works. If the work speaks for itself, the partnership continues. If it doesn’t, you’re not locked in.

We’ve found that development teams appreciate this approach because it removes the risk entirely. Our longest partnerships started the same way — a small project, strong results, and natural expansion from there.

Will you try to take our clients?

No. Full stop. Our business model depends on your client relationship staying intact. We have zero interest in your client list, your creative strategy, or your brand relationships. We exist in the technical marketing layer — that’s it. We operate under NDA for every partnership. We don’t pitch your clients. We don’t contact them independently. We don’t even mention Digital Mully in client-facing contexts unless you ask us to. Your clients, your relationship, your brand. We just do the work.

Is your team based in the United States?

Yes. Everyone who touches your client’s account is US-based and sourced through personal professional relationships built over 25 years. No offshore subcontracting. No anonymous freelancers.

The people in your client meetings are the same people doing the work. Development teams tell us this matters because they’ve had outsourcing experiences that damaged client trust. We don’t create that risk.

What platforms do you cover?

Magento and Adobe Commerce are our deepest specialization — it’s where we started and where most development team partnerships are focused. We also cover Shopify, BigCommerce, and WooCommerce.

If your team builds on those platforms, we can provide marketing services for your clients on those same platforms. The technical SEO and AI visibility work is platform-specific, not generic, which is why development teams prefer us over general marketing agencies.

How do you handle client meetings?

We show up prepared. Screens open, data pulled, talking points ready. We present findings and recommendations as your team, using your terminology and your deliverable formats.

We don’t talk past what we know, we don’t make promises we can’t keep, and we don’t fumble around in front of your clients. Multiple partners have told us we show up more prepared than their own employees. That’s the standard we hold ourselves to because your reputation is on the line in every meeting.

Can the marketing work actually create more development work for our team?

Yes, and this is one of the biggest benefits partners don’t expect. When we audit a client’s site and identify that the theme needs to be rebuilt for Core Web Vitals compliance, that’s your team’s billable development hours. When we recommend schema markup implementation, that’s development work.

When we run paid search campaigns that drive more traffic, that’s a busier platform that needs ongoing maintenance and feature development. Marketing services don’t compete with your development revenue — they amplify it.
